Eagles Lose Heartbreaker to Stallions
June 12, 2010
Fort Dodge, Iowa. The Iowa eagles lost a heartbreaker to the Quad City Stallions here Saturday. After being embarrassed in the first two games of the season and almost a month off since the last game, the Eagles came out swinging. After winning the coin toss the Eagles elected to receive. Behind veteran QB Brandon Dodson and a solid running attack, the Eagles marched down the field and scored on a 15 yard pass from Dodson to WR Neil Molitor in the corner of the end zone. After a botched two-point conversion attempt, the Eagles led 6-0. The Eagle’s defense then stopped the Stallions on two straight drives and gave the offense great field position, however the offense was not able to reach the end zone. On the Stallions third drive of the game they were able to score, although it was not easy as the Eagle’s defense was stifling. The Stallions then elected to go for two and were not denied as they took an 8-6 lead at the beginning of the second quarter. Both teams then struggled to score the rest of the second quarter as both defenses battled back and forth, however at the end of the second quarter the eagles moved the ball into field goal range, but the stallions were able to get through to block the field goal as the first half came to a close with the score Eagles 6 Stallions 8.
As the second half began the eagles again took another blow as the opening kick was taken 80 yards for a touchdown making the score 14-6 in favor of the Stallions. The Stallions then elected to go for two and again tacked on the two to make the score Eagles 6 Stallions 16. The Eagles then took another hit as their starting QB Brandon Dodson went down with an apparent shoulder injury, which kept him out for the rest of the game. The defenses once again battled throughout the third quarter and at the end of the third the score was Eagles 6 Stallions 16. The fourth quarter was owned by the eagles. QB Chet Freimuth, filling in for the injured Dodson, was firing on all cylinders as he marched the eagles down the field connecting with WR Jim Cherry for a 35 yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field. The Eagles then failed as they attempted a two point conversion to make the score Eagles 12 Stallions 16. The eagle defense then stopped the Stallions again, with great coverage and gang tackling, it was a reoccurring theme all game long, which forced the stallions to punt. The eagle’s offense wasted no time with 4:35 on the clock the eagles went to work starting on their own 40. After gaining 15 yards on a Freimuth Scramble up the middle, Freimuth then hit older brother FB Josh Freimuth for a 20 yard gain bringing the Eagles to the Stallions 22 yardline. From there, the Eagles went to the ground pounding it out on gains of 5, 7 and 8 yards. The Eagles then found themselves on the Stallion two yardline, Freimuth then attempted a QB keeper and was denied the first time on a gain of 1 before punching it in on the second attempt. The Eagles again failed on the PAT making the score Eagles 18 Stallions 16. The Stallions started on their own 25 yard line, driving 15 yards before the eagle defense came to life. The Stallions then had no choice but to go for it on a forth and three from there own 40 yardline. An incomplete pass over the middle looked to be the end of the game as the eagles celebrated on their sideline, but a questionable roughing the passer penalty on fourth down gave the Stallion’s new life. The Stallions were able to get the ball to the Eagle 12 yard line before they found themselves in a Fourth and goal situation. On fourth down the stallions were able to find their Tight end wide open over the middle of the field for a touchdown, on a botched coverage call by the eagle defense. The Stallions then tacked on another two point conversion making the score Eagles 18 Stallions 24 with 35 seconds left in the game. The Eagle offense then got the ball back and Freimuth out of desperation threw the ball over the middle of the field and was intercepted to end the game. The final score was Iowa Eagles 18 Quad Cities Stallions 24. After the game Head coach Marty Hart had this to say “I am very proud of our guys how they battled to the end. Being down 10 and battling back, you can’t ask for a better performance then what this team gave tonight, it’s just too bad we lost on such a terrible call. But we played 110 percent better then the first two games and I really can’t say enough about this game and how good this is for us as a team”. For his stellar performance not only on Offense but Defense as well CHET FREIMUTH has been named this week’s Barnhardt Media Player of the Week. He collected a total of 2 touchdowns (1 passing, 1 rushing) and played lockdown defense in his first game ever at cornerback. Big props to the Iowa Eagles for a total team effort this week and never giving up. The Iowa Eagles record now stands at 1-3.
